Here you will discover more about our shop and our history in the heart of Bolton. Booths Music is situated on Churchgate and has been one of Bolton’s leading musical instrument shops since 1832. It was Mr. James Booth, who is the great, great, great, great grandfather of the present owners who originally founded the store. His passion for music has been passed down through the generations and to all our expert staff and music tutors.
Booths Music is an independent music retailer, school and instrument repair centre. We operate from the heart of Bolton within a thriving musical community.
The staff at the shop play an integral part in the local music scene. This includes supplying goods and providing services, advice and information to local musicians, venues, music societies and bands (from brass band to rock) for decades.
Booths Music is probably more known for carrying a fantastic stock of instruments. In addition we have a sheet music supply, tuition studios and the best selection of accessories for all musicians in the area. Services also offered include event ticket sales and promotion, local musicians wanted or available as well as a professional repairs and restorations workshop.
We stock a wide range of new and preowned musical instruments and accessories. These range from guitar tutor books, banjo’s and electric violins to guitars, brass and woodwind instruments.

It may surprise you that Booths Music is not only the oldest independent family music shop in Bolton, but also the UK and quite possibly the world. In the summer of 1832, James Booth and son Thomas were opening our doors for the first time as ‘instrument makers’ and ‘sellers of music’. Seven generations of the same family have continued to welcome in thousands of Bolton’s musicians.

In 2007 we launched our teaching services and we haven’t looked back since. Experienced music tutors are on hand to give lessons and tuition in everything from guitar lessons to drum and woodwind tuition and vocal lessons. Our Bolton teaching studios are spacious and comfortable. Moreover, all music lessons have highly competitive rates and flexible hours. Instrument repairs have been a feature of Booths Music for generations. In the 1900s, the shop sold and assisted with brass products as well as more popular instruments at the time such as pianofortes.
Today the workshop is going stronger than ever with Tony, who has decades of experience in this field, as well as his son Will on guitar repairs.
The workshop is open for guitar setups and general repairs, woodwind services as well as brass and string jobs. We can also assist with effects and amplifier repairs.
The staff at Booths keep the cogs turning with for tuition, repairs and the general day-to-day of running the shop. As regular full-time staff, each day you will likely see Tony, Jean, Colin, Will and James. Evening-time duties are undertaken by Will as well as Andrea, often accompanied by son Dagan. Occasional Saturday staff also include James, Phil and Lydia.
